Why oud can feel unfamiliar
Oud forms when the Aquilaria tree answers an infection with a dark, fragrant resin. Depending on origin and distillation it can smell earthy, leathery, warm and balsamic, or slightly medicinal. Heavy, unfiltered oud can overwhelm a nose that has not met it before. Contemporary compositions keep the character of the wood but give it more air.
What makes an oud easy to start with
- Floral companions: blossoms soften the weight of the wood and add elegance.
- A bright opening: citrus or fruit in the top notes makes the first minutes inviting.
- Soft base notes: vanilla, amber or musk round off the resin.
- Real oud, carefully dosed: synthetic oud can feel sharp; natural oud develops softly on the skin.
