How to choose an oud perfume

“Oud” on a label can mean two different things: an accord built from aroma molecules, or the resin of the agarwood tree. Both are legitimate. Five questions tell you which one you are holding, and what it will do on your skin.

What to look for

Five things that actually differ

Natural or synthetic oud

A synthetic oud accord is stable, repeatable and affordable, which is why perfumery uses it widely. Natural agarwood is the resin an Aquilaria tree forms over years when it is wounded. The difference shows after three to six hours: an accord tends to stay where it started, natural oud keeps moving. A useful first question: does the house name its oud source at all?

Concentration

Eau de Parfum usually contains 15 to 20 percent fragrance oil, Extrait de Parfum 20 to 40 percent. The figure belongs on the bottle or the product page. A higher share of oil changes how a fragrance sits: an extrait stays closer to the skin and lasts longer.

Origin of the oud

Oud from different regions and distillations smells different. A named country, ideally a named province, shows that a house knows what it works with. The word “oud” alone says nothing about where it came from.

Maturation

After composition, alcohol and natural acids form esters, molecules that smell rounder and softer. Resting a fragrance for months before filling takes time and capital, so it is rarely mentioned. It is worth asking.

Longevity

How long a fragrance lasts depends on concentration, materials and skin. A stated number of hours only helps if the house commits to one. Test on skin, not on paper, and judge after several hours.

Where M'OUD stands

Questions

What is the best oud perfume?

There is no single best one. Choose by oud source, concentration, origin, maturation and longevity, and test on skin over several hours. M'OUD offers four extraits at 30 to 35 percent with natural oud from Thailand.

How can I tell real oud from synthetic oud?

Ask whether the oud source and origin are named. On skin, natural oud keeps changing for hours, while an accord tends to stay the same. A Discovery Set lets you compare over a full day.

How long does an oud extrait last?

M'OUD extraits last 12 to 24 hours on skin; Oud Amal Intense at 35 percent lasts 18 to 24 hours, longer on fabric.

Where is M'OUD made?

M'OUD Switzerland is a perfume house from Zürich, founded in 2022. The fragrances are composed and filled in Switzerland and certified by Swiss Label.

What does an oud extrait cost at M'OUD?

100 ml costs CHF 320 to CHF 420. The Discovery Set with three extraits of 2 ml costs CHF 40, and the full CHF 40 is credited on your first 100 ml bottle.

None of this settles on paper. Three extraits of 2 ml each, and the full CHF 40 comes off your first bottle.
